About languages

Languages are the way human beings have to communicate each other, to inform and be informed about everything that is around them.

There are language families, which is a group of languages descending from a common ancestor. For instance, romance languages family comprises all the languages descending from the Latin language. French, Italian or Spanish belong to this family.

We learn our mother language when we are children. Sometimes, we learn more than one language for different reasons, for example, different nationalities of our parents. Sometimes, we live in a foreign country for a period of time and we learn another language different from our mother tongue.

An auxiliary language is a language used by people with different languages to communicate each other. Nowadays, English language is used as an auxiliary language, since it is the most widespread language. That is the reason why more and more people study English and why it is the most taught and learnt language. French, German and Spanish are also widely taught, even though languages like Chinese and Arabic are becoming very popular. Many people from all over the world are interested in learning the Chinese language. After its reform and openness, there has been an economic development, therefore, Chinese language is though to be the language of the future.
On the other hand, learning the Arabic language has been a necessity since there have been international conflicts in Iraq. Therefore, news have been translated and Arabic translators and interpreters are widely needed.

Although there are thousand of languages, the Mandarin Chinese language is the most spoken. Arabic, Spanish, English and Hindi are the other languages having more native speakers in the world.

As a result of the economical globalization, it has become more and more necessary to translate, and to learn and use more and more languages. On the other hand, this globalization can make African languages disappear. That is the reason why UNESCO encourages maintaining these languages in order not to loose the great variety of language and the cultural heritage.
