Proof reading

Proofreading is the last phase of the translation process. This phase is essential for the translation, since it is a careful reading of the new written text to ensure that the new text has the same meaning and sense than the original text. In this phase, the proofreader ensures the perfect comprehension of the new text and the coherence in all the aspects.

The proofreader is the on who does the proofreading. In this phase, the translator may have forgotten some aspect when translating a term, or perhaps he was not able to transmit perfectly the message of the original text. Therefore, in this phase the proofreader will be able to fix these little difficulties in order to avoid possible problems when reading the final text.

The spell and grammar checker is going to do the proofreading regarding to the linguistics elements. Possible spell mistakes, grammar, punctuation and orthography are corrected. It is very important that the text was linguistically impeccable. A translation having mistakes cannot be considered a good translation, even if it communicates correctly the message of the source text.

Ideally, in the translation process, both the proofreader and the spell and grammar checker would be different people to the translator. In this way, for the proofreader and/or spell and grammar checker would be much easier to notice a translation or orthographic mistake than if he has been the translator. However, in many cases, the translator is in charge of the functions of the proofreader and spell and grammar checker for several reasons. For instance, in the urgent translations, there is no time for other person to do this proofreading and spell and grammar checking, since this would mean to postpone the deadline. In these cases, the translator does these tasks of proofreading and spell and grammar checking.
